“Magnolias Dripping with Molasses” is an advanced/difficult arrangement drawn from the first movement of Ellington’s 1946 “Deep South Suite.” A slow introduction sets up a build toward a break for the trumpet section, while riffs and solo passages keep the arrangement active along the way. Trumpet, trombone, and clarinet receive featured attention. Its closing sequence narrows to a small band-within-a-band passage, then grows through a long crescendo to a tutti final chord.
