The 496R Hot Ceramic is a rhythm-position humbucker built around a ceramic magnet. Gibson describes its response in terms of added highs, definition, sustain, and cutting power without muddiness; leads are characterized with a biting, bluesy edge and increased musical harmonics. Neck-spaced pole pieces match the string layout at that position. Shielded four-conductor wiring opens series, parallel, and split-coil options, while full wax potting is intended to eliminate microphonic feedback.
